Plumbing The Depth

Before you start fishing it's important to know how deep the water
is in your swim. The most accurate way to do this is to 'plumb' it
.

Once you have attached your hook, place a plumb bomb on the end
You can buy these from your tackle shop, and in the main you will find
two types

Type 1.
Simply closes over your hook and is spring loaded
.

Type 2.
Has a strip of cork across the bottom,
thread the hook through the eye on the top and secure the point of the hook in the cork.

Make sure that your float isn't weighted with the correct amount of shot. It should be less for this exercise. Set the depth at what you think it might be.

Swing the line out in front of you, and check the area all around your swim, this will give you a mental picture of what it's like down there.

If your float vanishes from sight, then obviously you haven't set the line deep enough.

If however the float lies on the top, then you are too deep.

As you get closer to the exact depth, your float will gradually settle

Once you find the depth, your float will sit as it would when loaded with the correct amount of shot.

Repeat this around your swim looking for shelves or deep pools. It really is worth the time and effort
