Elasticate a pole

Some of the tools you will need
I
f you have just bought your first pole and have been left baffled as to how to set it up with elastic, you are in the right place. Get yourself a craft knife, hack saw, and sand paper

Slip connectors

W
hat other bits and pieces will you need? I'm glad you asked. Get a packet of 'slip connectors' as seen here.

Bushes

A
lso, a packet of PTFE bushes. You get a few in a pack.

Elastic

N
ext it's the elastic which comes in different diameters. Ask the staff in the tackle shop who will tell you which one to get depending on what type of fishing you do.

bung

F
inally, you will need a bung, it comes with a 'tail' which isn't seen here.

Cutting

N
ow, if you're not put off yet, we put it all together. This bit is critical. You need to cut the tip off the pole so the 'bush' will fit on the end snugly. Take your time and get it right!

Sanding

I
f you're not in tears after the cutting, lightly sand the edge to get a smooth finish.

Fit bush

Fit the bush on the newly trimmed and smoothed end. It should be a snug fit. You should be feeling quite pleased with yourself at this point.

You can elasticate up to 3 sections of your pole but we are doing just one here. Slip the bung into the back end of the section.

Mark the bung

You need to cut the bung down so it fits snugly into the end of the section, so mark it all the way round where you will need to make the cut.

Measure the length of elastic that you need to go through the section. Allow enough for tying. Thread the elastic through the 'eye' of the bung tail.

T
ie a single knot and tighten.
Remember that the finished elastic length should be under a little tension through the pole section.

N
ow feed the tail through the narrow end of the bung until it clicks home.

D
rop the other end of the elastic into the back of the section and shake it through. For finer elastic you might need to use a wire feed.

Add connector

Once the elastic is through the top of the pole, thread it through the sleeve of your 'slip connector'

Now add the other part of the connector as shown here. Then click the two pieces together.

Tied off

Tie a single knot behind the connector and tighten. Nearly there now, stay with it!

Finished!

It should now look like this at the business end. On the connector there's a little 'collar' Pull this down and hook the loop of your pole rig over the groove, push the collar back up, and you're away!
